What is Death?

Death = Separation of the Body from the Mind and Spirit

Do you have a misunderstanding of what death really is?

Matthew 22:23-33 – That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. “Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him. Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. Finally, the woman died. Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?” Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”

When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.

I have heard the argument that when Jesus refers to the passage that God is the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, that he couldn’t possibly be the God of the living because all three of those people are dead.

There is no real way for us to answer this argument, if we don’t understand the question, “What is Death?”.

What is death?
Death is the separation of the body from the mind and spirit.

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Notice how God first refers to himself in a plural sense, by using words such as ‘us’ and ‘our’ and then refers to himself singularly as ‘his own image’.

Being made in God’s image consists of three parts. The Mind (God the Father), the Body (Jesus – God the Son) and the Spirit (God the Holy Spirit). These three parts make One whole person. The resurrection is the rejoining of the body to the mind and spirit.

What is a person?
A Person is the joined entity of a body , a mind and a spirit.

Therefore, when Jesus says that God is the God of the living, he is telling the truth, because the mind and spirit are not dead, only the body is. The physical world is subject to the curse of the original sin of Adam.

Therefore, it is only the body that must die. The mind and spirit are of another realm and are not subject to the curse, which is why they can continue to live after the body has died. At the resurrection, the body will also be raised uncorrupted and eternal.

As a side note, this also explains the Jewish argument of how the Trinity of God can be considered One God and not three separate ones.
